What is it used for?
Metronidazole injection is used to treat serious infections caused by certain anaerobic bacteria and some parasites, including certain intestinal and genital infections. It may also be used to prevent certain infections around surgery when prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It enters susceptible bacteria and parasites and damages their genetic material, stopping them from growing and surviving.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given slowly into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection and should be decided by the treating doctor.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness, metallic taste and pain or irritation at the injection site.

Precautions
Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the last dose. Tell the doctor if there is liver disease, a history of seizures or nerve problems, or an allergy to metronidazole. Inform the doctor about all medicines being taken, especially warfarin. Seek medical help for severe rash, numbness or tingling, seizures, confusion, or severe diarrhoea.
