What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, ears, airways and urinary tract. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and headache. Mild skin rash may also occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any previous allergy to cefixime, penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics, kidney problems, or a history of severe diarrhoea after antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
