What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, throat, airways, urinary tract and other areas, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Disperse the tablet in water as directed on the pack or by the pharmacist, and take it immediately after it has dispersed. Do not share or reuse leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting may occur. Mild rash or headache can also occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is an allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or penicillin, or if there is kidney disease. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially if it contains blood. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can lead to resistance.
