What is it used for?
Metronidazole is used to treat certain infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and parasites such as amoebiasis and giardiasis. It may also be prescribed for conditions such as bacterial vaginosis and some dental or abdominal infections, as directed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It enters susceptible bacteria and parasites and damages their genetic material, stopping them from growing and surviving.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Follow the product label for measuring and taking the medicine; do not take extra doses for a missed dose. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the last dose.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, metallic taste and dizziness.

Precautions
Do not use if allergic to metronidazole or similar medicines. Tell the doctor about pregnancy or breastfeeding, liver disease, nervous system disorders, or medicines such as warfarin, lithium, disulfiram or seizure medicines. Seek medical help for numbness, tingling, seizures, severe rash or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
