What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is a prescription antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, such as certain infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps prevent some bacteria from breaking down amoxicillin, making it effective against a wider range of bacteria.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed and follow the instructions on the label. Take doses at evenly spaced times and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Taking it with a meal may reduce stomach upset. Do not share leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, skin rash and oral or vaginal thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to amoxicillin, penicillin or related antibiotics. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe rash. Contact a doctor for severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially during or after treatment. Tell the doctor about liver or kidney problems, previous antibiotic-related jaundice, or other medicines being taken.
