What is it used for?
Atorvastatin is used to lower high cholesterol, especially LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides. It also helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at increased cardiovascular risk.

How does it work?
It reduces cholesterol production in the liver and helps the liver remove more LDL cholesterol from the blood.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food. Take it at the same time each day and do not stop it without medical advice. Continue diet and lifestyle measures recommended by the prescriber.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion and muscle aches may occur. Contact a doctor promptly for unexplained or severe muscle pain, weakness or dark urine.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, heavy alcohol use, thyroid problems or a history of muscle problems. Seek medical advice before using it with other medicines, as some medicines can increase the risk of muscle problems. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised by a doctor. Liver tests may be needed during treatment.
