What is it used for?
Pancreatin is used as pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy when the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes. It helps the body digest fats, proteins and carbohydrates, such as in pancreatic insufficiency.
How does it work?
It supplies enzymes similar to those normally made by the pancreas. These enzymes help break down food so nutrients can be absorbed.
How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed or as stated on the product label, usually with meals or snacks. If the product is enteric-coated, swallow it whole; do not crush or chew it. Do not change the dose without medical advice.
Common side effects
Stomach pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting may occur. Mouth irritation can occur if the medicine is chewed.
Precautions
Do not use if allergic to pancreatin or pork-derived products. Seek medical advice if severe or persistent abdominal pain, vomiting or constipation occurs. People with gout, high uric acid, cystic fibrosis, or a history of bowel narrowing should use it only under medical supervision.
