What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with clavulanate is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, throat, sinuses, chest, urinary tract, skin and teeth, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as common colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxycillin kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall. Clavulanate helps amoxycillin remain effective against bacteria that can otherwise break it down.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed and follow the instructions on the label. Take each dose at the recommended time and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Taking it at the start of a meal may help reduce stomach upset. Do not share leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, skin rash and thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxycillin, other beta-lactam antibiotics or any of its ingredients. Tell the doctor about previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems, kidney disease, glandular fever, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe skin rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Antibiotics should be used only when prescribed.
