What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with clavulanate is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth, when prescribed by a healthcare professional. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
Amoxycillin kills bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall. Clavulanate helps protect amoxycillin from enzymes made by some resistant bacteria.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or take them without medical advice.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, stomach discomfort, headache, skin rash and oral or vaginal thrush may occur.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxycillin, clavulanate or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Tell the healthcare professional about liver disease, kidney disease, previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems, or glandular fever. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe skin rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can lead to resistance.
