What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanate is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall. Clavulanate helps protect amoxicillin from enzymes produced by some bacteria, allowing it to work against a wider range of infections.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and preferably with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet with water, complete the prescribed course, and do not share it with others. Do not take an extra dose if a dose is missed without following medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, headache, skin rash and thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not take this medicine if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, clavulanate or similar antibiotics. Tell the prescriber about liver problems, previous antibiotic-related jaundice, kidney disease, allergies or current medicines. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, severe rash, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can promote resistance.
