What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with clavulanate is an antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
Amoxycillin kills bacteria by interfering with their protective cell wall. Clavulanate helps protect amoxycillin from enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to it.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and preferably with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Swallow with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share this medicine or use leftover tablets.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, skin rash and thrush may occur.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, other penicillin-type antibiotics or certain cephalosporins. Tell the doctor about liver disease, kidney disease, previous antibiotic-related jaundice or severe diarrhoea. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe skin rash, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
