What is it used for?
Amikacin injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including certain infections of the lungs, blood, abdomen, urinary tract, bones and joints. It is usually used when other antibiotics may not be suitable and is given under medical supervision.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins, which kills the bacteria and helps control the infection.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a muscle or vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type of infection, body weight and kidney function. Do not self-inject or stop treatment early unless advised by the doctor.

Common side effects
Pain at the injection site, nausea, vomiting and headache may occur. Kidney problems, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness or balance problems can occur and require prompt medical attention.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, hearing or balance problems, dehydration, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any previous allergy to aminoglycoside antibiotics. Kidney function and, when needed, hearing should be monitored during treatment. Inform the doctor about all other medicines, especially medicines that may affect the kidneys or hearing. Seek urgent medical help for reduced urination, swelling, unusual weakness, ringing in the ears, hearing changes, severe dizziness or breathing difficulty.
