What is it used for?
Piperacillin + tazobactam is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and other hospital-acquired infections. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Piperacillin kills bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall. Tazobactam helps protect piperacillin from enzymes made by some bacteria, allowing it to work against a wider range of infections.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection or intravenous infusion by a doctor or nurse, usually in a hospital or clinical setting. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Use it only as prescribed and complete the prescribed course unless the treating doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, rash, headache, and pain or irritation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it without medical advice if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, other beta-lactam antibiotics, or cephalosporins. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, bleeding problems, seizures, or previous antibiotic-related severe diarrhoea. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe rash, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea. The doctor may monitor kidney function and blood tests during prolonged treatment.
