What is it used for?
Metformin is mainly used to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines, along with a suitable diet and exercise plan.

How does it work?
It lowers the amount of glucose made by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively. This helps reduce blood sugar levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or after food, to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet with water and do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, gas, indigestion and reduced appetite. These often improve as the body adjusts.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, heart failure, heavy alcohol use, or any serious infection or dehydration. Kidney function should be checked during treatment. Metformin may need to be stopped temporarily before some scans using injected contrast dye or during major surgery, as advised by a doctor. Seek medical help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting or unusual drowsiness.
