What is it used for?
Vancomycin is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by certain Gram-positive bacteria, including some infections caused by MRSA. When taken by mouth, it is used for certain infections of the intestine, such as Clostridioides difficile infection.
How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from building their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria or prevents them from growing.
How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed. The route depends on the formulation and infection: injectable vancomycin is usually given into a vein by a healthcare professional, while oral vancomycin is used for specific intestinal infections. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, pain or inflammation at the injection site, and infusion-related flushing or itching. Kidney problems and hearing changes can occur, especially with injectable treatment, and require medical attention.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, hearing problems, or previous allergy to vancomycin. Kidney function and, when needed, blood levels may be monitored during injectable treatment. Injectable vancomycin must be given at the recommended rate because rapid infusion can cause flushing, itching, low blood pressure, or breathing difficulty. Seek urgent medical help for severe rash, breathing difficulty, reduced urination, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
