What is it used for?
Cefuroxime is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including certain infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest, urinary tract and skin. It does not treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the prescribed dose and treatment duration, and complete the course even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them for colds and flu.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and headache. Mild skin rash may also occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to cefuroxime, penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Inform the doctor if there is kidney disease or a previous severe reaction to antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
