What is it used for?
Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation and suppress an overactive immune response. It may be prescribed for certain allergic, inflammatory, autoimmune and other serious medical conditions, only under medical supervision.

How does it work?
It reduces the release of substances that cause inflammation and limits excessive immune-system activity.

How to take/use it
Use exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Do not change the dose or stop treatment suddenly, especially after prolonged use. If it is taken by mouth, taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset.

Common side effects
Indigestion, increased appetite, difficulty sleeping, mood changes, increased blood sugar, fluid retention and weight gain. Longer use may cause skin thinning and increased risk of infections.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. Tell the doctor about diabetes, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, osteoporosis, mental health problems, glaucoma or any current infection. Dexamethasone can mask signs of infection and may worsen some infections. Avoid live vaccines unless approved by the doctor. Seek medical advice before stopping it after regular or prolonged use.
