What is it used for?
Etoricoxib is used to relieve pain and swelling caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. It may also be prescribed for acute gout or short-term dental pain.

How does it work?
It reduces the production of substances called prostaglandins that cause pain, swelling and inflammation. It belongs to a group of medicines called selective COX-2 anti-inflammatory medicines.

How to take/use it
Take it by mouth with water, exactly as prescribed. Swallow the tablet whole and do not take more than the recommended amount or use it for longer than advised. It may be taken with or without food.

Common side effects
Indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, headache, dizziness, swelling of the feet or legs and increased blood pressure.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about high blood pressure, heart disease, previous heart attack or stroke, stomach ulcers or bleeding, kidney or liver disease, or an allergy to aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medicines. Avoid taking it with other anti-inflammatory painkillers unless advised. It may increase the risk of heart problems, especially with higher doses or long-term use. Seek medical help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, black stools, severe skin reactions or swelling of the face or throat. It should generally be avoided during pregnancy, especially after 20 weeks, unless specifically prescribed.
