What is it used for?
Acyclovir 5% ointment is used to treat herpes simplex infections of the skin, including cold sores and genital herpes sores.

How does it work?
It is an antiviral medicine that blocks the ability of the herpes virus to multiply, helping the sores heal.

How to take/use it
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin as directed by a doctor or the product label. Wash hands before and after use. Avoid applying it to the eyes, inside the mouth, or other areas unless specifically advised.

Common side effects
Mild burning, stinging, itching, redness, irritation or dryness at the application site.

Precautions
For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes. Do not pick or touch the sores unnecessarily, and wash hands regularly to reduce spreading the infection. Acyclovir does not remove the virus from the body or reliably prevent transmission. Seek medical advice if the infection worsens, does not improve, or if severe irritation or an allergic reaction occurs.
