What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, throat, lungs, urinary tract and other areas. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from making their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve, and do not share it with others. Do not take more or use it for longer than advised.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting. Mild rash may also occur.
Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney disease or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash.
